Alabama and Offensive Line Coach Chris Kapilovic Part Ways: A New Beginning for the Crimson Tide
The University of Alabama and offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic have decided to part ways after two seasons, according to multiple sources. This decision comes as the team prepares for a fresh start, with a new offensive line coach and a focus on improving the unit's performance.
Kapilovic joined the Alabama staff under head coach Kalen DeBoer, after a successful four-year stint at Michigan State. The Crimson Tide entered the season with high expectations, boasting a talented offensive line featuring three players on the Preaseason All-SEC Teams: left tackle Kadyn Proctor, center Parker Brailsford, and right guard Jaeden Roberts. However, the line struggled to meet these expectations, with Alabama's running game producing only 104.1 yards per game, ranking near the bottom of the SEC.
The offensive line faced significant challenges, with Roberts, a previous starter with NFL draft potential, becoming a reserve player. Right tackle Wilkin Formby transitioned to right guard, while Geno VanDeMark and Kam Dewberry shared the left guard position. This instability was evident as eight different offensive linemen received significant playing time, with 170 or more snaps.
The situation has led to a complete overhaul of the offensive line. Proctor and Brailsford have declared for the NFL draft, Formby has transferred, and Dewberry and VanDeMark have exhausted their eligibility. Only Michael Carroll is returning after starting six games at right tackle. Additionally, several reserve offensive linemen have entered the transfer portal, including Olaus Alinen, Arkel Anugwom, Micah DeBose, and Roq Montgomery.
To address these changes, Alabama has signed several replacements, including Kaden Strayhorn, Ty Haywood, Racin Delgatty, Nick Brooks, Ethan Fields, and Jayvin James. The team has also added five freshmen to the 2026 signing class: Jared Doughty, Tyrell Miller, Chris Booker, Bear Fretwell, and Bryson Cooley. This strategic move aims to rebuild the offensive line and improve the team's overall performance.
