Breakthrough! New Vaccine Protects Against Salmonella Paratyphi A - Oxford Study Explained (2026)

A groundbreaking study led by Oxford University has revealed a promising vaccine candidate, CVD 1902, that offers robust protection against Salmonella Paratyphi A infection in adults. This oral live-attenuated vaccine has shown no safety concerns in a phase 2b trial, which is crucial given the alarming global impact of enteric fever caused by Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi A. These bacteria annually claim over 100,000 lives and result in a staggering 8 million disability-adjusted life years. A concerning 30% of these cases, translating to more than 2 million infections, are attributed to Salmonella Paratyphi A, for which no vaccine has been available until now.

The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, highlights the significant burden of these diseases, particularly among travelers. According to the U.S. CDC, most cases of typhoid and paratyphoid fever in the United States occur during international travel. Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, emphasized the ongoing battle against bacterial infections like paratyphoid, which disproportionately affect children in resource-poor regions.

The vaccine's development is a collaborative effort, funded by the UK Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Oxford Biomedical Research Centre. Bharat Biotech International Ltd. and the University of Maryland have also contributed to the project, where the vaccine was originally engineered. The research provides a glimmer of hope that this deadly disease could be controlled through vaccination, especially in the challenging conditions of affected communities.
