👟 "CHARIOTS OF LEGACY?": the 1924 Paris Olympics, the 2024 Games; and the Wirral Connection📽 As the world tunes into the 2024 Olympics, I thought I'd reshare a story that beautifully weaves together sport, film, history, and my own roots on The Wirral. Every Olympic Games carries echoes of its predecessors, and one such remarkable narrative lies in the iconic 1981 British film “Chariots of Fire,” centered around the 1924 Paris Olympics.📽 Producer David Puttnam’s Chariots of Fire won no fewer than four Oscars and led scriptwriter Colin Welland to declaim that “the British are coming”. The film's moving portrayal of athletes’ Eric Liddell's and Harold Abrahams’ remarkable journeys to their Gold medals captured the spirit of those Games and the underlying themes of dedication, sportsmanship, faith, and resilience. 📽 Partly financed by Mohammed Al-Fayed, the film is not noted for its spectacular exterior location work. In particular, key scenes were filmed on The Wirral. Specifically, Bebington’s Oval Sports Centre served as the vital stand-in for the 1924 Olympic stadium, Stade Colombes Paris. Originally opened in 1888, Bebington Oval was chosen because it matched the period and still had a cinder track. Thousands of local extras were recruited for the crowd scenes. Those who managed to wear actual Edwardian clothes were paid £20, those in normal dress, £10. #ThisDayInHistory | The successful charge of the Australian Army's 4th Light Horse Brigade against the Ottoman Turks at Beersheba (present-day #Israel) during the First World War is considered "#Australia's first big achievement on the world stage." The Ottoman Empire, which controlled much of the Middle East prior to World War One, had allied with Germany. Great Britain invaded Palestine from Egypt, yet faced a strong line of Ottoman defenses from Gaza on the coast to Beersheba in the Negev Desert. Having failed to take Gaza, the British force attempted to flank it to the east at Beersheba. Due to dwindling resources, they chose a frontal mounted charge. Aside from the fact that this is a great film, it demonstrates how to introduce uncertainty for the enemy in a frontal attack. The Australian Lighthorse were not cavalry, but mounted infantry. They would always dismount before joining battle on foot with rifles vs. charging all the way like cavalry. The Ottomans and their German advisors got used to seeing that.When the Australian Lighthorse approached Beersheba, the German advisors to the Turks were confident that they would dismount vs. charge. That was a fatal miscalculation, because the light horse charged like cavalry. Despite the Ottomans having a defensive advantage with infantry, machine guns, and artillery, the Australians successfully charged over open ground and seized a key Ottoman outpost.This ultimately led the British removing the Ottomans from Palestine, and starting a new chapter in the Middle East that has repercussions to this day.
