A heartwarming holiday surprise is in store for the residents of Redcar, as the beloved Coatham roundabout seal sculptures have been restored just in time for Christmas!
These iconic seals have become a cherished part of the community since their installation in 2011, with a fourth seal joining the family in 2017. However, earlier this year, one of the original seals sadly collapsed, leaving a gap in this beloved landmark.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that public art installations like these are a waste of resources, but the love and enthusiasm shown by the locals prove otherwise. Artist Ste Iredale, the creator of these sculptures, has stepped up to the challenge, re-creating the original designs with a twist.
Iredale shared his excitement, saying, "I've loved seeing the reaction these sculptures have had over the years." And this time, he's ensuring they're here to stay, crafting them from durable red cedar wood.
The seals will be illuminated by solar lights, adding a festive glow to the roundabout. And just in time for Christmas, they'll don festive hats, courtesy of a thoughtful 16-year-old named Oliver and his grandmother.
"It's brilliant to see them back where they belong," Oliver said, capturing the sentiment of the entire community.
Councillor Carl Quartermain, in charge of highways and transport, expressed his relief, stating, "It's going to be glorious to see them back to full splendour." He also gave a shout-out to his colleague, Councillor Lynne Rynn, for her efforts in pushing for the seals' return.
And this is the part most people miss... The impact of public art extends beyond aesthetics. It brings communities together, sparks conversations, and creates a sense of pride and ownership.
A film titled "Four Seals" is currently in production, directed by Neil Bates, the former Regent Cinema manager.
