I embarked on a journey to discover if the Bighorn River, a renowned trout fishing destination, lived up to its legendary status. As an angler who values solitude, the prospect of crowded waters initially deterred me. However, the promise of abundant trout and enticing magazine photos lured me to Fort Smith, Montana.
Staying at Kingfisher Lodge, I experienced exceptional hospitality and service. The river itself exceeded expectations with its diverse scenery and thriving trout population. Despite the presence of other drift boats, the guides skillfully navigated the river, ensuring ample space for all.
Our group, ranging from experienced anglers to newcomers, caught fish with the guidance of knowledgeable guides. My son-in-law, a novice, landed a 23-inch brown trout on his third day of fly fishing, a testament to the river's potential.
The fishing technique involved nymph indicator rigs with sowbugs as the primary attraction. While our catch wasn't extravagant, it was a rewarding experience. We learned about the impact of high water years on trout populations and the potential role of dam management.
One challenge we faced was the pervasive moss, which required constant attention to keep our flies and leaders clear. However, this nuisance was balanced by the knowledge that it supported a thriving insect population, essential for the fishery's health.
My personal catch included a brown trout and a rainbow, both personal bests. I reflected on the importance of learning from good guides and the potential benefits of using heavier tippet and barrel swivels in our nymph rigs.
Despite being in my later years, I am hopeful that I will have the opportunity to return to the Bighorn River. It is a destination that offers not only exceptional fishing but also valuable lessons and memorable experiences.
