The centre, originally scheduled to reopen by Easter, will now stay closed beyond this busy period. The reason? The landfill site requires more extensive groundwork, a discovery made after further assessments.
But here's where it gets controversial: Councillor Martin Horwood apologized for the inconvenience, but some residents might question the timing. Easter marks a peak in recycling activity, and the closure could disrupt local households' routines.
The centre, managed by Ubico, has served the community since the 1990s and received its last upgrade in 2019. The upcoming improvements aim to enhance safety, sustainability, and user experience. This includes modernizing waste management with renewable energy-powered compactors and promoting a circular economy through a reuse shop.
And this is the part most people miss: The upgrades also address the growing challenge of electrical waste, offering better protection and EV charging points for service vehicles. These additions reflect a forward-thinking approach to environmental stewardship.
During the closure, residents can still utilize alternative recycling centres like Pyke Quarry and Wingmoor Farm, open daily. Kerbside collections, bring banks, and bulky waste services are also available options.
