A fascinating story unfolds in Kochi, where a unique selfie moment has captured the attention of many. The selfie in question is not just any ordinary selfie, but one that involves a bishop and a statue of a saint, creating an intriguing blend of faith and modern-day trends.
Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, during his visit to Kochi, decided to pose for a selfie with a statue of St. Carlo Acutis, known as 'God's Influencer'. This selfie spot, located in the courtyard of the St. Carlo Acutis Church, has become a popular attraction for devotees, especially the younger generation.
The church itself holds a special significance as it is the first in India, and possibly the world, to be named after this millennial saint. Consecrated shortly after Pope Leo XIV declared St. Acutis a saint on September 7, the church offers a unique and modern take on religious devotion.
Fr. Mathew Sojan Maliekal explains, "Many faithful, especially youngsters, take selfies at the spot. It's a pleasant change to see the saint depicted in a contemporary way, wearing sneakers and a backpack."
Archbishop Girelli, who was in Kochi for the beatification of Mother Eliswa, celebrated a mass at the church and praised its design and dedication to the young saint. He emphasized the church's welcoming atmosphere, stating, "It says to people that here, all are welcome. This is a place for all to come, praise, and worship God."
In his homily, Girelli highlighted St. Carlo Acutis as an exemplary role model for youth. He quoted Pope Leo XIV, who described St. Acutis as "a young man and a teenager from our own day, in love with Jesus and ready to give everything for Him."
Girelli added, "St. Carlos Acutis loved to say that heaven has always been waiting for us. Let us follow his model and encourage many youths to follow the path he paved to reach our heavenly destination."
