A man is facing attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting of New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd. The suspect, 20-year-old Frederick Green, a Bronx resident, was arrested on Monday and charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, according to statements to CBS News, the BBC’s U.S. partner.
The incident occurred outside a well-known Manhattan restaurant at 2:00 a.m. local time on November 16, amid a confrontation with a group of strangers. Boyd, 29, sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen area, with the bullet striking his lung and lodging near the pulmonary artery. He was hospitalized in critical condition but later released.
ESPN reported that Boyd had recently visited Jets teammates at their practice facility.
Authorities described that Boyd, accompanied by two Jets teammates and another friend, was taunted by a group of strangers outside the restaurant. A physical altercation ensued, during which Green allegedly fired twice at Boyd.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured Green fleeing the scene and entering a vehicle with another person at the wheel.
Green was apprehended on December 8 in Buffalo, approximately 360 miles from New York City, after reportedly hiding at his girlfriend’s apartment, according to law enforcement sources cited by CBS.
The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that a person of interest had been taken into custody. In a stand-off at the apartment building, authorities observed the suspect peering from an window before retreating indoors upon spotting law enforcement and a canine unit. The standoff concluded when the suspect surrendered with his hands raised. Officials noted that he had significantly altered his appearance in an apparent effort to evade detection.
Before joining the Jets earlier this year, Boyd spent two seasons with the Houston Texans, one season with the Arizona Cardinals, and four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He had been placed on injured reserve after a shoulder injury sustained during Jets practice in August.
