This system is considered a 'black widow' system, where a pulsar is paired with a smaller companion. In the past, the companion's material would have streamed onto the pulsar, causing it to spin faster. This system is different, because the companion is an exoplanet.

Zhang questioned whether it formed like a normal planet or if it formed by stripping the outside of a star.

Roger Romani, an expert in black widow systems, proposed that as the companion cools, the carbon and oxygen in its interior crystallize, with pure carbon crystals mixing with helium. But this is where the debate begins: something must keep the oxygen and nitrogen separate, and that's the part that scientists are still trying to figure out.

The Webb telescope's infrared vision is the key to this discovery. Located a million miles from Earth, its instruments are kept incredibly cold, which is essential for these observations.

Zhang explained that the heat on Earth interferes with observations, making this discovery impossible from the ground.
