This 12-credit certificate program provides practicing engineers the opportunity to update and renew themselves with the latest knowledge and skills in the ever evolving field of embedded systems. Embedded systems are special purpose computer systems commonly found in consumer electronic smart devices, industrial control systems and robots, and military applications, etc. Embedded systems, based on their particular applications, may also be known as: mobile computing, internet-of-things (IoT), system-on-chip (SoC), and cyber-physical system (CPS), etc. Recent developments also bring embedded systems to the medical devices such as portable MRI, robotic prostheses, and health monitors, etc. A common theme of the myriad of applications is the ever advancing embedded hardware and embedded software of the underlying embedded systems. The field of embedded systems involves the disciplines and knowledge of modern computer architecture, embedded system interface and programming, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and cyber security. This certificate program provides practicing engineers opportunity to update and renew themselves with the latest knowledge and skills in this ever evolving field.

Entry requirements for University of Rhode Island
A BS degree in computer engineering electrical engineering biomedical engineering computer science or other related fields is required to earn the certificate
Upon the completion of the program the students will be awarded with the certificate in embedded systems Students who enroll in the certificate program before receiving their BS degrees will receive the certificate after they earn their BS degrees The earned credits can be applied to the URI MS and PhD programs wherever the specific program allows
A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in the undergraduate career that can be confirmed with official transcripts from the institution.
TOEFL IBT -
An overall score of 80 or above 82 for teaching assistantship consideration AND
Minimum scores in the following areas -
Reading 19
Writing 18
Listening 17
Speaking 18 the suggested minimum speaking score for a teaching assistantship is 20.
If you are below the minimum in one area by two points or in two areas by one point but have an overall score of 80 or above the Dean will make a determination if you can be considered.
IELTS -
International English Language Testing System IELTS All scores must be sent directly to URI Required minimum score of 6.5 AND minimum scores in the following areas -
Reading 6.5
Writing 6.5
Listening 6.5
Speaking 6.5. The suggested minimum speaking score for a teaching assistantship is 7.
The minimum score on the Paper-based TOEFL is 550.
Pearson Test of English - Required minimum scores are Reading 53 Writing 59 Listening 47 and Speaking 47 - 62 for international teaching assistants.
