Get ready to be blown away by TIME's Top 100 Photos of 2025! This annual selection showcases incredible images that tell powerful stories, capturing the essence of the year's most significant events. From split-second action shots to thought-provoking long-term projects, these photographs remind us of the impact of visual storytelling.
PetaPixel recently had the pleasure of chatting with Katherine Pomerantz, the Director of Photography at TIME, about this year's captivating collection. With eight years of experience at the helm, Pomerantz shared insights into the process of curating these top photos and the reasons behind her choices.
"Every year, we embark on this collaborative journey with our entire photo team," Pomerantz explains. "It's a project that starts in January, and by August, we're in full swing, narrowing down the selections and making decisive choices."
The team gathers photos throughout the year, reviewing them monthly. Pomerantz highlights the fun and collaborative nature of the process, where debates and agreements lead to a diverse range of images. "Everybody has their favorite photographers and contacts, so we pull in a variety of perspectives and styles."
One of the most captivating aspects of these photos is their ability to evoke raw human emotion. Pomerantz emphasizes the importance of capturing these moments, stating, "Raw human emotion is something we all crave. When it's visible in a photograph, it's incredibly impactful."
And it's not just about the photos themselves. The sequencing and ordering of the images play a vital role in emotional storytelling. Pomerantz explains, "We intentionally represent the entire spectrum of human emotion. The sequencing is carefully considered to create a powerful narrative."
But here's where it gets controversial... Pomerantz reveals that one of the most challenging parts of the process is selecting the cover image. As a significant print issue, the cover must be visually striking and tell a compelling story, but it also needs to represent the year's events as a whole, rather than focusing solely on the biggest news story.
This year, Britta Jaschinski's captivating photo of a green sea turtle under ultraviolet light graces the cover. It's a perfect choice, as it not only captures attention but also tells a story about using forensic evidence to combat wildlife crime.
And this is the part most people miss... The cover image is just the beginning. The complete collection of TIME's Top 100 Photos of 2025 is a testament to the talent of photographers worldwide, capturing the human experience in all its forms. From chaos to contemplation, these images inspire and move us.
So, what do you think? Which image from this year's collection speaks to you the most? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's celebrate the power of photography together!
