Prepare to be charmed by the unexpected twist in Walmart's Black Friday campaign! The Grinch, a beloved character, has found an unlikely advocate in actor Walton Goggins.
Goggins, known for his versatile roles in shows like "The Shield" and "Justified," has taken on the iconic Grinch persona to promote Walmart's Black Friday deals. But here's where it gets intriguing: Goggins' decision to embrace this role was not taken lightly, as he understands the weight of portraying such an iconic character.
"When they suggested it, I was both excited and nervous," Goggins shares. "Dr. Seuss' work is a cornerstone of literature, and The Grinch is an iconic figure. I wanted to do justice to the character's essence."
To prepare, Goggins immersed himself in the story, carrying "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" with him on his travels. He studied how the author crafted the character, who initially seeks to ruin the holiday spirit but eventually discovers its true meaning lies in community and care, not material gifts.
But the actor's true transformation came when he donned the prosthetics for the commercial shoot. "It was a lengthy process, but once the prosthetic was in place, I felt it," he recalls. "I saw myself as someone irritated yet intrigued, and my wife agreed, adding a layer of depth to the character."
Walmart's strategy to capture attention for Black Friday and holiday shopping is a clever one. They've reunited cast members from popular shows like "Mean Girls" and "Office Space" for previous campaigns. Last year, they even created a ten-part commercial series, featuring actors like Taye Diggs and Ian Somerhalder, to remind viewers of their favorite shows.
However, the real stars of these campaigns are the deals. Walmart is offering incredible discounts, such as a 10-in-1 game table set for $149.99 (originally $381.99), a 3D printer for $229 (originally $799), and an iHome towel warmer for $34.24.
Goggins, who has worked with big brands like GoDaddy and PepsiCo, shares his journey of embracing commercial work. He used to be "fearful" about ads but has since learned to add his unique twist. Inspired by actor Samuel L. Jackson's approach, Goggins stands in front of a mirror, figuring out his own way to deliver the message.
"It's about finding my own strength, not conforming to someone else's idea," Goggins explains. "I want to communicate in my own style."
And what about the possibility of reprising the Grinch role? "I had a blast, but that decision is not mine to make," Goggins says with a smile. "It's above my pay grade, but I'd be delighted to return if needed."
