Xbox's New Leadership: No Pressure to Embrace AI, Focus on People-Powered Art
The Xbox team, under the leadership of Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, is taking a deliberate approach to AI integration. They emphasize that AI is a tool to support, not disrupt, the creative process.
In an exclusive interview with Windows Central, Sharma and Booty revealed that there are no mandatory directives on AI usage. They encourage their teams to explore AI's potential, such as code assistance and bug detection, while maintaining a human-centric approach.
"We're committed to art made by people," Booty stated. "Technology is a means to enhance that art, not replace it."
Sharma further emphasized the importance of ethical AI, stating, "There is no bad AI at Xbox. We will not prioritize short-term efficiency over the quality of our ecosystem."
She also highlighted her dedication to console hardware, contrasting it with the cross-device 'This is an Xbox' campaign introduced by former Xbox president Sarah Bond. Sharma assured that Xbox will continue to support players on various platforms.
When it comes to strategy, Sharma and Booty are open to revisions. They want to understand the 'why' behind past decisions and focus on long-term value. Booty added that Xbox's studio system is designed to be a first-party developer, not just a publisher.
Despite recent leadership changes, including the departure of Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond, Sharma expressed her determination to address challenges and revitalize the Xbox brand. She believes in the team's ability to succeed and is committed to their vision for the next 25 years.
"We're fully immersed in this journey," Sharma concluded. "Together, we will make Xbox even stronger."
