ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Degree and GPA

  • A U.S. bachelor’s degree or the equivalent is required (for example, a four-year/120 credit hour accredited program).
  • A minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Transcripts and Supportive Documents

  • Official Transcripts from undergraduate/graduate institution (showing bachelor's/master's degree conferral).
  • If required, Course-by-course evaluation, English translation of all original documents from one of Stony Brook University's approved NACES members listed below may be requested :

Word Evaluation Services (WES)
International Education Evaluators, Inc. (IEE)
Education Credential Evaluators (ECE).

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Three Letters of Recommendation

  • Statement of Purpose

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The GRE General Test is required by several Graduate School programs.
Please refer to the admissions requirement information about your specific program of interest.
GRE Scores should be forwarded directly to The Graduate School (Code: 2548).

English Proficiency Requirements:

    • English language proficiency test results will be considered as part of the review process for admission for any applicant who submits test results as part of their application.
    • IELTS: Overall score of 6.5, with no subsection recommended to be below 6.Register Now
    • TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 90 for doctoral applicants and 80 for master’s applicants.Register Now
    • Duolingo English test: A minimum score of 105 is required for Master's applicants. A minimum score of 110 is required for PhD applicants.Register Now

Note: Students whose scores on either of these tests are more than two years old must retake the test.

A nonimmigrant U.S. visa is an entry document for individuals coming to the U.S. temporarily for specific purposes such as study or work. It is issued by the U.S. Department of State and is attached to your passport. It allows you to request permission to enter the U.S. at any U.S. port of entry.

Visa Application

  • You should apply for an F-1 or J-1 Visa at a US Embassy/Consulate in your home country.
  • Steps: Please visit the Visa and Immigration services website to check out the detailed application process and steps.

Request your I-20/DS-2019

  • Once you have been admitted, you will receive an email from VIS with instructions on how to request your Form I-20/DS-2019. Click here for more information.
  • For detailed information please visit the Visa and Immigration Services (VIS) website. You can make an appointment on their website as well as mail them at VIS Database and call on (631)632-4685.

Acceptance

  • Confirm your acceptance by responding to your graduate program and review SOLAR for holds and to do items.
  • Please Note: Send outstanding documents to the Graduate School for Graduate School programsonly.
  • Set up your Stony Brook email account.
  • Send completed health forms to student health services.
  • Review the University’s policy on student health service.
  • Complete orientation (required for all new graduate students)

Transcripts

  • Unofficial copies for both domestic and international credentials are acceptable for an admission decision to be made. If admitted, the applicant must submit final official transcripts/evaluations.
  • To be deemed official, transcripts must be sent directly from the college/university or evaluation agency via mail or through an approved transcript delivery service.

TheStudent Financial ServicesOffice provides the highest standard of support for students, families, University departments, and external agencies. Student focused policies and procedures aim to advance the financial literacy of Stony Brook students as well as promote timely degree completions.

Health and Safety

  • All international students are billed and enrolled into the SUNY health insurance once registered for at least 1 credit hour due to their student visa. No action is needed for an international student to be enrolled into the SUNY health insurance.
  • If a student has personal health insurance, they may apply for a waiver to opt out of the SUNY health insurance. The personal health insurance must be comparable or better than the SUNY policy and meet all requirements to receive a waiver. You can find more information on waiver requirements, procedures and deadlines here.

  • Whether through student organizations, cultural events, recreational activities, or networking opportunities, graduate students will find numerous ways to enrich their experience, foster friendships, and create lasting memories. Our university is dedicated to creating an inclusive and vibrant community where all students can thrive.
  • There are numerous clubs and organizations on campus where graduate students can participate, contribute, and benefit.

Career Services and Guidance

  • The Career Center provides career coaching and support for students in MA, MS, and PhD programs who are interested in entering private industry, government, and the non-profit sector. Graduate students are encouraged to take advantage of Career Center resources, services, job fairs, workshops, and other networking opportunities.
  • Join a Career community : Graduate students are encouraged to join a Career Community to learn more about different career paths and make connections with employers.
  • Make an appointment with a Career Coach .

  • Campus Residences offers on-campus apartments for matriculated graduate students and graduate Health Science Center students. Apartment communities have a variety of unit types that all provide kitchen spaces. Each apartment community contains an Area Commons building containing your area office, fitness center, and computing center. Schomburg Apartments is located on West Campus. Chapin Apartments is located on East Campus. There are housing options for students enrolled in a program at our Southampton Campus.
